Winter Driving Tips

Driving in winter weather can be dangerous, so it’s important to take extra care. Here are some tips that can help you stay safe:

Slow down – Drive slowly and smoothly, and leave more space than usual between you and the car in front.

Brake gently – Avoid skidding by braking gently, and ease off the brakes if your wheels lock.

Use high gears – Drive in the highest gear possible, and start in second gear to help reduce wheel slip.

Use your lights – Turn on your lights to increase visibility, and use dipped headlights in heavy snow. If visibility is below 100 meters, turn on your fog lights.

Avoid sudden actions – Sudden actions can cause you to lose control, so accelerate and brake gently.
Be aware of wheel tracks – Compressed snow in wheel tracks can be more icy than fresh snow if the road hasn’t been gritted.
Prepare for the worst – Carry weatherproof clothing and strong boots if you need to get out of your car.
Don’t drive unless necessary –It’s best to avoid driving in inclement weather unless you need to.
